Boca Grande enjoys hot mackerel bite!

Fishing report for 11-01-10, by Captain Van Hubbard.

Our mackerel fishing has been great!

Our wind and weather have been cooperating and we have been catching lots of mackerel recently. While trout closed today snook and redfish are open and available. It looks like the winds will not be a problem for a few more days at least outside and even when it blows moderately we still have good action inside Charlotte Harbor and Lemon Bay. I took some time off to spend with family and friends even taking in some fall colors on a brief visit to the North Carolina Mountains. The R&R helped and it is always great to share time with out of town relatives.
It was great to get back on the water and enjoy some fishing action as hot as the afternoon temperatures. We have enjoyed some exciting action with lots of big, even some huge Spanish mackerel, from two to five pounds. The kings have teased us with intermittent action and quality fish from five pound school sized fish up to twenty–eight pounders. Ladyfish, jacks, and sharks keep rods bent and the captain hustling. A good mix of sharks, we even saw a big hammerhead on Wednesday’s trip. Lots of strong spinner sharks jumping and screaming line off the reels.

I expect the mackerel action to improve as more fish move into the Boca Grande area migrating south. Wind and cooler temps will control the movement in and thru near shore Gulf waters. Right now the conditions are almost too hot so we should have Gulf fishing for Thanksgiving this year.

Snook and redfish are biting if you are willing to put in some time. Minnows are still abundant and our fish are well feed. As minnows move outside our Charlotte Harbor, Back Country catching will improve until cold temps slow it down. Snook are abundant just not turned on yet because it’s been so warm. Redfish are ready to play when we can get on a school that is undisturbed and happy. I am seeing plenty of both of our favorite flats fish. Don’t wait till it gets too cold and everything changes.

I added some spray rails manufactured by Smart Rails and they sure help my Dorado run better and drier. They even added more stability and lift. I am looking forward to refinishing her this winter for our Spring season. I look forward to seeing you. We are catching lots of fish so Let’s Go Fishin’ soon.
