Boca Grande/Charlotte Harbor fishing report by Captain Van Hubbard 3-31-09

High winds are keeping us inside but the fish are cooperating most of the time. Snook fishing has been very good and we are catching slot fish a few big trophy class slabs.
Wednesday Gary Roberts and Tom joined me for a two boat trip. Our boats went in opposite directions but had similar results; snook and trout. The fish are scattered right now! Tom had a thirty-six in slab and we had two slot snook. Our only red was too big but they took home some nice trout to be sure they had a fine mess of fish for their hungry crew. We had numerous smaller snook and some big jacks to help bend the poles. Action was sporadic but not too long between bites.
Ward Curtis had to take a day off from work at the office to entertain a client, Don, on Thursday. Ward started off with a thirty inch redfish and then the fun began. They landed several undersized snook before Don bagged a thirty four inch monster on ten pound light spinning gear. We had to chase that one down but got great photos. We ended up with several slot redfish and trout for dinner. The big jacks almost wore us out in one spot so we had to move.
The wind blew us out for the rest of the week but Monday was beautiful. I picked up John Sumrall and his oldest boys, Banks, and Chase at nine AM. Bait was tough but one of the captains I’ve helped in the past cruised by and saved my day. I purchased some shrimp for pompano and trout but the waters we stirred up around the passes and pinfish ate the shrimp before trout could find em on the flats. We tried some snook fishing spots but the tide was slow picking up against the breeze that built up. As the currents flow increased the bite picked up and Banks took us to school landing ten or eleven almost big enough snook. John and Chase did finally get their shots and landed a few. We tried for some trout and reds but no luck this time here. We had fun, I showed them around this awesome Charlotte Harbor area and I look forward to more fun together in the future.
Kingfish and mackerel are here but we need to get some calmer conditions before we can track em down. Water temps are perfect so I am sure we’ll tear em up as soon as we can reach them safely. I saw several kings Friday and a bunch of tarpon but it was too rough to catch any. Spring is in the air and March winds will be history soon; even thou some are expected to linger this week. Let’s Go Fishin’ soon. Captain Van Hubbard. <www.captvan.com>
